Transforming the Primordial Snake
Submission to G-d's will is the key to life.
In responding to their sin by unleashing deadly, poisonous snakes against them, G-d was telling the people that sin, which was introduced to humanity by the Primordial Snake, leads to death, while submission to G-d's will is the key to life.
Conquering the Impurity of Death
To overcome the greatest form of impurity, we must transcend logic.
Death is the antithesis of holiness, for G d is the source of life and vitality. When confronted with the reality of death, we become exposed to the the truth that everything is decaying, dying, headed toward oblivion, and life seems futile and meaningless. The individual must undergo a purification process to cure his depression (real or potential) and reorient him back toward the enthusiasm and vitality of holiness.
Between Jacob and Israel
He does not look at evil in Jacob, and sees no perversity in Israel; G-d, their G-d, is with them.
Jewish Role-Playing
The servant serves his master because he fears him, the child is devoted to his parents out of his love for them.
When we pray during the week, we must strive to overcome the many confusing and distracting thoughts that intrude from our worldly affairs. On Shabbat, however, we do not have to expend any effort to rise above these distractions. All we need to do is cultivate sensitivity to the special illumination of our soul that is revealed on Shabbat.
Giving Strength to the Good
Divine service with overpowering love is the remedy for antagonism toward G-d.
When a person transgresses with the express intention to disobey G-d's divine commandments, as Balaam did, he augments the power of the three varieties of "pure evil". In this case, the person increases the world's conscious and unconscious hostility to G-d's intents and purposes.
