Chariots Ascending
The Zohar meditates on the creatures of the Supernal Chariot.
"Joseph harnessed his chariot and went up to meet his father Israel in Goshen."

In Hebrew, the word for "chariot" is "Merkava", meaning "vehicle". The Zohar hints at the various forms of supernal entities - "creatures" - which are to be "harnessed" to power one to reach and maintain higher and higher states of consciousness to "ascends" spiritual levels.
Sometimes conflict is actually preparing for greater things
Judah and Joseph were both kings: Judah was the king of the tribes, the progenitor of King David's dynasty, representing the sefira of malchut.

Joseph was second only to the King of Egypt, the conduit through which the abundance would flow to Judah and the Nation of Israel; he represents the sefira of yesod. The union of yesod with malchut was the next step in the redemption of mankind.

Soul Steps
Each person gradually perfects the levels of the soul
When G-d first created man, He gathered soil from the four corners of the world. He then drew down into him the breath of life from its source in the spiritual Holy Temple above it to create a living soul. This soul was composed of three levels [in ascending order]: Nefesh, Ruach and Neshama.
