Weighty Meaning
Kabbalah describes the half-shekel donation as a unification of the name of G-d.
This week's Torah reading begins with the commandment that each adult male Israelite to donate a half-shekel for the construction of the Tabernacle. The word "shekel" is derived from "mishkal", meaning "weight", and relates to the silver content of the coin that had to weigh 20 gera.

Rabbi Chiya said, "Certainly this is the case, but everything depends on their returning to the spiritual source and repenting."

There are three who cause harm to themselves: one who curses himself, one who throws bread, or breadcrumbs, onto the ground, and one who kindles a candle towards the end of the Shabbat, before the congregation has recited the "U'va L'Tzion" prayer [on Saturday night], because he causes the fire of Purgatory to be kindled before its time.
