KABBALISTIC LAG B'OMER SEMINAR

Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai

Often referred to simply as Rashbi (an acronym taken from the initials Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai), he was one of the great Tannaitic sages who lived in the Land of Israel during the 2nd century CE. He was one of the foremost students of Rabbi Akiva, and one of the greatest Kabbalists of all time. His kabbalistic revelations were recorded by his disciples, and his teachings were added to over succeeding generations, becoming, in the early 1300's C.E., what is now known as the Zohar.

When Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai sensed the time of his death approaching, his house became surrounded by the fire of the Shechina (the Holy Presence) and only his son Rabbi Elazar and Rabbi Abba were able to remain with him. To them he revealed the remaining deep secrets that he had not yet taught, completing the holy task of his lifetime in order to pass into the World to Come without shame. The flow of wisdom that came into This World on that day caused it be a day of great joy forever. It is said that the Shechina in the form of a pillar of fire escorted his body to its final resting place.
