Meron is the resting place of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, original author of the Zohar.
Each year on Lag B'Omer, the anniversary of the passing of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, over 200,000 people converge on the sleepy farming village of Meron in the Galilean Hills of Israel. They come from all over the world to celebrate the revelation of the deepest secrets of Jewish mysticism, which were taught by Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and written in the Holy book known as the Zohar, the Book of Splendor.
Days beforehand, visitors approach Meron and all the hotels, guest houses and homes in Meron and nearby Safed are filled to bursting. Hundreds more camp in the forests and valleys between the two towns. The children in the towns spend every spare moment excitedly gathering wood for the enormous bonfires to be lit. Finally on the eve of Lag B'Omer, tens of thousands of visitors converge on the town of Meron, attempting to gather as close as possible to the gravesite of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and his son, Elazar. As the sky grows dark, dozens of bonfires are lit and the crowd erupts in joyous dancing and singing:
"Bar Yochai, nimshachta ashreicha, shemen sasson micheverecha!"
(Bar Yochai - fortunate are you, anointed with joyous oil [i.e. wisdom], over and above your companions!)
Listen to an incredible true story of a miracle that occurred in Meron in our generation.
